In exactly 24 days we will be leaving for a heritage adventure of a lifetime....we will be flying to Ljubliana, Slovenia where we will pick up a car and travel to Kamnik, Slovenia where we will be in search of the region my family came from. Those that created and molded me, genetically-and by passing down their nurturing to other relatives I haven't met, that forged the way for so many before me, right down to my own father, and he to me...subconsciously, but there.
Who we all are- the remnants of the ghosts of the past, the relatives who laid groundwork and rules, belief systems and taught their sons and daughters, who became our Great Grandparents and beyond. The pieces of the patchwork quilt that are sewn together through time.
I am not sure why the Slovenian side appeals to me so much. I don't know if it is because my Dad is gone....and while I begged him to tell me his story in a recorder in the year before he died, he chose not to, said he couldn't, and left me with so many questions....and that led me on the road to genealogy....OR if it because I found 2 really awesome cousins through this journey.....namely Larry Matola and Gary DelNero...or is it that I feel some bizarre connection to Ludmila...as if somehow pieces of her lie deep within me...and some of my choices are her very own. Maybe pieces of all of that is my truth.
Either way, in exactly 24 days I will be drugged heavily, on a plane ride to a foreign land to discover a culture that may or not make sense to me. To see the ancestral lands of the Osredkar/Preskar line. We will be staying in an utterly charming little cottage. We will be traveling through Slovenia, into Austria, down through Croatia into Bosnia during this journey.
We hope that you join us for this adventure. There will be a lot of land and houses we travel to, but also wildlife photography, hikes, photoshoots with other photographers, and YES. Wild horses of Livno, Bosnia. (I couldn't be this close and NOT go!).
We won't say too much else before leaving....maybe a day or so ahead of time. But I wanted to get the blog started now. Here is our cottage:
